Hello Parents, Educators, and Caregivers,
We are so happy that the child/children in your life are taking part in COSI Connects science learning kits! We have designed this snow box to be fun, engaging, and educational. We know education is important now more than ever, and COSI stands ready to be your partner with this COSI science kit. Together, we will engage, inspire, and transform our students and youth in science, technology, snowing, and math (STEM) at school and at home.
This box is full of experiences designed to engage learners of all ages! As you look through the Activity Book found inside the kit, you will find step-by-step instructions, interactive questions that will promote critical thinking, and explanations of the science behind each activity. Each box contains the materials needed to complete each activity, but many activities also provide options to expand on the science using materials found at home. While many children will be able to independently complete all of these activities, this is a great opportunity for an adult, classmate, or sibling to join in the fun.
If you want to dig deeper into science content, additional experiences are available through our free COSI Connects digital platform, where you can filter videos and activities by topic and grade level. Check here to see new COSI Kit themes as they are released.
Click on the tabs below to find a description of each activity in this box, the Learning Standards that correspond to each of those activities, and additional resources.
Each COSI Connects Snow box is filled with engaging, hands-on STEM activities. COSI’s education experts have created these activities to encourage and reinforce Ohio's Learning Standards. The instructions and materials needed are listed for each activity inside the snow activity book.
Activity 1 - Make a Snowflake - Have you ever looked really closely at a snowflake? If you did, you probably noticed that all snowflakes have a hexagonal (6-sided) structure! Make your own paper snowflakes.
Activity 2 - Water and Ice - Change the freezing point of water and pick up an ice cube with a string!
Activity 3 - Insulation Exploration - Animals, plants, and even humans use snow for insulation sometimes! What makes a good insulator? Become a scientists as you carefully measure temperatures to learn how well different materials insulate.
Activity 4 - Animal Tracking - Animals interact with the snow too – one simple way is that they leave their tracks in the snow. Match animal tracks to their pictures in a memory game. Then, create some artwork and tell a snow story!
Activity 5 - Walking on Snow - Animal feet have many adaptations that help them to adapt to the snow. One adaptation that some animals have is foot size. Humans have also created technologies to walk across the surface of snow. Make some fake snow to test this out!

Activity 1: Make a Paper Snowflake
First Grade 1.2CO Identify examples of art and artists in students’ everyday lives.
Second Grade 2.G.1 Recognize and identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons based on the number of sides or vertices.
Fifth Grade 5.3RE Evaluate the relationship between works of art and human experiences.
Activity 2: Water & Ice
First Grade 1.ESS.2: Water on Earth is present in many forms.
First Grade 1.PS.1: Properties of objects and materials can change.
Second Grade 2.ESS.2: Water is present in the atmosphere.
Third Grade 3.PS.2: Matter exists in different states, each of which has different properties.
Third Grade 3.NF.1 Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.
Activity 3: Insulation Exploration
Third Grade 3.MD. Solve problems involving money, measurement, and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects.
Fourth Grade 4.PS.2: Energy can be transferred from one location to another or can be transformed from one form to another.
Fourth Grade 4.MD.1 Know relative sizes of the metric measurement units within one system of units.
Fifth Grade 5.MD.1 Know relative sizes of these U.S. customary measurement units: pounds, ounces, miles, yards, feet, inches, gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces, hours, minutes, and seconds.
Activity 4: Animal Tracking
First Grade 1.LS.1 Living things have basic needs, which are met by obtaining materials from the physical environment.
First Grade 1.LS.2: Living things survive only in environments that meet their needs.
Third Grade SL.2.4 Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences.
Fourth Grade 4.LS.1: Changes in an organism’s environment are sometimes beneficial to its survival and sometimes harmful.
Activity 5: Walking on Snow
Kindergarten K.LS.2: Living things have physical traits and behaviors, which influence their survival.
Third Grade 3.MD.2 Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams, kilograms, and liters.
Fourth Grade 4.MD.1 Know relative sizes of the metric measurement units within one system of units. Metric units include kilometer, meter, centimeter, and millimeter; kilogram and gram; and liter and milliliter.
Social Studies Standards
Kindergarten: Personal history can be shared through stories and pictures. Humans depend on and impact the physical environment in order to supply food, clothing and shelter.
First Grade: Families interact with the physical environment differently in different times and places. Diverse cultural practices address basic human needs in various ways and may change over time. Maps can be used to locate and identify places.
Second Grade: Human activities alter the physical environment, both positively and negatively. Cultures develop in unique ways, in part through the influence of the physical environment.
Third Grade: Evidence of positive and negative human modification of the environment can be observed in the local community.
Fifth Grade: Regions can be determined using data related to various criteria including landform, climate, population, and cultural and economic characteristics.
Sixth Grade: Regions can be determined, classified and compared using data related to various criteria including landform, climate, population, and cultural and economic characteristics.

Activity 1 – Make a Snowflake
Second Grade 2.G.1. Identify and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces compared visually, not by measuring. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
Activity 2 - Water & Ice
Second Grade 2-ESS2-3. Obtain information to identify where water is found on Earth and that it can be solid or liquid.
Third Grade 3.NF.1. Understand a fraction 1/b (e.g., 1/4) as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b (e.g., 4) equal parts; understand a fraction a/b (e.g., 2/4) as the quantity formed by a (e.g., 2) parts of size 1/b. (e.g., 1/4)
Activity 3 – Insulation Exploration
