Hello Parents, Educators, and Caregivers,
We are so happy that the child/children in your life are taking part in COSI Connects science learning kits! We have designed this Dinosaur box to be fun, engaging, and educational. We know education is important now more than ever, and COSI stands ready to be your partner with this COSI science kit. Together, we will engage, inspire, and transform our students and youth in sscience,
technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) at school and at home.
This box is full of experiences designed to engage learners of all ages! As you look through the Activity Book found inside the kit, you will find step-by-step instructions, interactive questions that will promote critical thinking, and explanations of the science behind each activity. Each box contains the materials needed to complete each activity, but many activities also provide options to expand on the science using materials found at home. While many children will be able to independently complete all of these activities, this is a great opportunity for an adult, classmate, or sibling to join in the fun.
If you want to dig deeper into science content, additional experiences are available through our free COSI Connects digital platform, where you can filter videos and activities by topic and grade level. Check here to see new COSI Kit themes as they are released.
Click on the tabs below to find a description of each activity in this box, the Ohio Learning Standards that correspond to each of those activities, and additional resources.
Each COSI Connects Dinosaur box is filled with engaging, hands-on STEAM activities. COSI’s education experts have created these activities to encourage and reinforce Ohio's Learning Standards. The instructions and materials needed are listed for each activity inside the Dinosaur activity book.
What Happened First? - In this two-part activity, each child will learn about timelines by putting together a puzzle of Earth’s Geologic Time Scale and check their knowledge of events in Earth’s history.
Make a Fossil! - In this activity, each child will learn about how fossils are created by making their own model fossil with a sponge, Epsom salt, and water. They will also play a matching game to identify whether a fossil is a tooth or toe bone of a dinosaur.
Make an Impression! - In this activity, each child will make a mold fossil in modeling clay and decide whether they will make a footprint, trackway, or body impression. They will learn how these clues are important for paleontologists to learn more about how animals moved and behaved.
Sedimentary Rock - In this activity, each child will learn how animal bones can become fossils in sedimentary rock. They will construct layers of sediment to bury a dinosaur, then test out their excavation skills!
Document a Real Fossil - There is a REAL fossil in this box! As a certified COSI paleontologist, your child will learn how to document and identify their fossil.

“Ohio’s Learning Standards emphasize skills like critical thinking and problem solving — qualities most sought by today’s employers. By teaching our students to apply these skills to what they are learning in school, we can make sure they are on track to graduate from high school and enjoy success in college, careers and life.” Ohio Department of Education
Science and History Standards
What Happened First?
Second Grade 2.1 Time can be shown graphically on calendars and timelines.
Second Grade 2.LS.2: All organisms alive today result from their ancestors, some of which may be extinct. Not all kinds of organisms that lived in the past are represented by living organisms today.
Eighth Grade 8.ESS.4: Evidence of the dynamic changes of Earth’s surface through time is found in the geologic record.
Make a Fossil! and Tooth or Toe?
Fourth Grade 4.LS.2: Fossils can be compared to one another and to present-day organisms according to their similarities and differences.
Eighth Grade 8.LS.1: Diversity of species, a result of variation of traits, occurs through the process of evolution and extinction over many generations. The fossil records provide evidence that changes have occurred in number and types of species.
Trackways, Trace Fossils, and Mold Fossils
Second Grade 2.LS.1: Living things cause changes on Earth.
Fourth Grade 4.LS.2: Fossils can be compared to one another and to present-day organisms according to their similarities and differences.
Sedimentary Rock
Fourth Grade 4.ESS.2: The surface of Earth changes due to weathering.
Fourth Grade 4.ESS.3: The surface of Earth changes due to erosion and deposition.
Document a Real Fossil
Second Grade 2.LS.2: All organisms alive today result from their ancestors, some of which may be extinct. Not all kinds of organisms that lived in the past are represented by living organisms today.
Fourth Grade 4.LS.2: Fossils can be compared to one another and to present-day organisms according to their similarities and differences.
In this box, your child will also find opportunities to write down their scientific findings in their workbook and connect to digital learning resources through COSI Connects. This will allow them to reach English Language Arts, Technology and Digital Literacy Learning standards.
