Social science to support your mission – in learning, experiences, and beyond.

COSI’s Center for Research and Evaluation (CRE) is a social science consulting team housed within one of the top science museums in the United States. As a department of COSI, we help our partners engage their publics, inspire their teams, and transform their work with intention and evidence. Our core work is studying how people interact with out-of-school learning and site-based experiences - and what happens as a result. We pair that knowledge with theoretically-grounded strategy insights and personalized support to help our partners and clients improve what they offer and build better connections with people and communities.

About CRE

Founded in 2011, COSI’s Center for Research and Evaluation (CRE) is an interdisciplinary team of social scientists and museum professionals with expertise in the study of learning and leisure experiences. Our team’s location within COSI – a hands-on science museum in Columbus, Ohio – allows for a unique relationship between research and practice, creating rich opportunities for collaboration and innovation, while providing strong administrative, fiscal, and institutional support. We work closely with clients and partners to formulate and answer important questions in ways that provide useful and usable data for improving projects, programs, site-based experiences, and more. We creatively employ, refine, and implement established research and evaluation methods and frequently develop new ones to meet the demands of our clients’ practical contexts. Across these efforts, we are committed to sharing what we learn in ways that support our clients, our field, and the public good.

CRE provides a wide range of services, including full scale evaluation, planning and development support, capacity-building and training, research design and implementation, and everything in between. We are happy to support you as a thought partner, research collaborator, program evaluator, facilitator, data collector, data analyst, and/or communicator as suits the needs of your team.

Our Team

We are highly trained researchers and evaluators, with expertise in a variety of social science disciplines and cutting-edge empirical methods. Together we have decades of combined experience on research, evaluation, and facilitation projects with partners from all across the country. We combine a friendly and accessible approach to applied social science with access to the resources of a nationally recognized science museum to help our partners achieve their goals.

Services

Our team of social scientists has experience with many approaches and techniques, and there are a variety of ways you can work with us.

Send us an email at researchevaluation@cosi .org to share your ideas or learn more about any of the options below.

Program, Experience, and Process Evaluation

Need to hire an external evaluator?

CRE provides rigorous evaluation services at all phases, from defining success to helping teams measure it. We bring expertise in qualitative and quantitative methods and a client-centered approach to our work, customizing each project to meet your needs while drawing on a wide repertoire of field-tested resources and strategies. From pitching your idea to documenting the implementation, we’re here to help you articulate your game plan, show your work, and communicate your outcomes.

Working on a grant?

Our team brings deep experience serving as external evaluators on grants funded by the National Science Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and other federal agencies. We can design an evaluation approach to align with your project, fulfill funder requirements, and help you make evidence-based decisions along the way. We can also assist in the development of supporting materials such as impact statements or logic models. We are happy to collaborate in the proposal development stage and beyond.

Research

Exploring a big question?

Whether you need to know how something works, why something happens, or how people think about something, CRE can help you design a study to generate knowledge that you can carry forward and apply. Depending on your interests and capacity, we are happy to work side by side to co-develop and implement a study with you, or to take implementation off your plate while studying issues of importance to you. The CRE team can also help you share the results of research with professional and scholarly audiences.

Working on a grant?

CRE team members have a long history leading and contributing to research as Principal Investigators, Co-Principal Investigators, and Senior Personnel on federal grants, and we frequently help multidisciplinary teams in the planning and relationship-building processes that are necessary to working together effectively. Our team’s location within a museum allows for a unique relationship between research and practice, creating rich opportunities for collaboration and innovation, while providing strong administrative, fiscal, and institutional support for navigating compliance and implementation. We welcome opportunities to contribute to new research collaborations, and to help illuminate research questions that complement your work.

Facilitation and Planning

Need help turning your vision into a roadmap?

CRE can help you organize your thoughts and prioritize what matters most while keeping an eye on the big picture. With significant experience in customized strategic planning and logic model development, we can work with you to design a process that fits your team’s values, culture, and most pressing needs without losing momentum. We can help if you’re starting from scratch, but also if you’re refreshing your plan, navigating change, or taking a long view. Our work together can be the start of the tools you reach for to stay on track.

Need to host a meeting, workshop, or retreat that matters?

We’re here to support you in developing a game plan that will help your guests (or your staff!) feel welcome, energized, and purposeful. With deep knowledge of research on motivation and engagement, we can help you apply theory to practice in making your gathering a success. As a department of COSI, we can also help you leverage the resources of our wider organization, including expertise in research communication and learning design, along with infrastructural support for meeting space, catering, and opportunities to engage with the museum.

Capacity-Building

Want to help your team skill up in research and evaluation?

CRE can support you in investing in your people and bringing more intention and evidence to the work you do. We can provide professional development for your staff, students, or volunteers through a model that makes sense for where you are. Depending on your needs, this could be a workshop, a mentorship agreement, a series of training sessions, or something entirely new. Our professional learning offerings can be tailored to specific areas of practice (e.g., exhibit developers or educators), specific skills (e.g., building a logic model, planning a study, or prototyping), or designed as a more general introduction to evaluative thinking for your whole organization.

Want to build internal systems for measuring what you do?

We believe in “long game” solutions that you can rely on over time and that can grow with you. CRE can support you in creating custom data collection and analysis tools that allow for year-to-year comparison and consistency, with grounding in solid research and attention to the demands of daily operations. We’ll also make sure you have the support you need to be successful in implementing these tools, whether that includes ongoing consulting, periodic maintenance, short-term training, or a combination of approaches.
