Animal Specialist Intern (click for details)

Objective

Support COSI’s living collection through a project based assignment that will either teach guest about the animals in the collection or support the care and well-being of the animal collection. In addition, provide quality care to the animal collection and assisting in guest related experiences utilizing animals in the collection.

Education/Experience

Ideal candidate possesses excellent organizational skills, is energetic and flexible, able to coordinate diverse tasks, able to establish good working relationships with team members, and has excellent verbal and written communication skills. High school diploma or equivalent; current enrollment in a related course of study (e.g. zoology, animal sciences, biology) at the collegiate level. Previous experience with hands-on animal care in a professional setting preferred. This position is eligible for course credit; it is the intern’s responsibility to inquire with their advisors and professors to see if they can use this experience towards course credit.

Duties & Responsibilities

A. Learn how to care for the animals in COSI’s Living Collection and provide daily husbandry, including feeding animals and cleaning enclosures.
B. Assist the Living Collections Assistant(s) and Manager of Living Collection in training of COSI’s animal collection for various animal behaviors.
C. Gain experience facilitating both formal and informal guest related animal experiences.
D. Assist in maintaining accurate records for the animal collection; including but not limited to daily care checklists, sign out sheets, vet records, and weight logs.
E. Complete intern project that has been approved by the Manager of Living Collections. Project may include, but is not limited to; creating new cart experiences, developing new animal enrichment, and searching for grant and funding opportunities.
F. Research and implement various enrichment items and methods.
G. Support general COSI operations through participation in team meetings and extended training opportunities, such as COSI University.
H. Serve as an example to other COSI team members in matters of appearance, attitude and performance in a manner best serving COSI team members and guests.
I. In accordance with COSI's Guest Services Strategy and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in guest services by assuring guest safety, using courtesy to drive each guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.
