Rescheduling a program can be accomplished at no penalty of the deposit if done so at least 2 weeks prior to the program date by contacting COSI. If COSI is not contacted in this timeframe, rescheduling the event or transferring the credit to another event is no longer available; and payment is non-refundable.

Rescheduling a program due to weather (i.e. a snow day) for a new date within the same school year is available at no penalty if done so 2 hours prior to the program start time. If the program is not rescheduled in the same school year, payment will not be refunded.

Rat Basketball: The Away Game

Yep, real rats! COSI’s famous Rat Basketball hits the road in this one-of-a-kind outreach workshop exploring the science of psychology! How can a rodent with a penny-sized brain learn to play basketball? Better yet, why would we teach an animal a behavior so opposed to its nature? In this hands-on program, you’ll explore behavior conditioning and see its strength as you test positive reinforcement on your classmates. Then, you’ll cheer on the rats as they compete in a one-on-one lightning round showdown!

Superhero Science

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Nah, it’s super-science! Backed by a team of comic book heroes, you’ll use science to bring “impossible” super powers to life! Explore “levitation” by manipulating air pressure, explore potential and kinetic energy, use the states of matter to create flight, and learn the ingredients of a cloud by making real clouds right in the classroom! Pass Hero Training and you’ll get a chance to touch COSI’s famous Electrostatic Generator to see (and feel!) the shocking power of electricity at work! You can keep the city safe with science on your side!

  • Grade Level: Grades 1-8

Beginner Robotics

What is a robot? How does it work? There’s one way to find out. In this incredible introductory workshop, you’ll explore energy, circuitry, and the “language” robots speak: programming! Then, you’ll take control of your own hand-held Bee-Bot and test out COSI’s customized challenges that connect to grade-level literature, science, and mathematics standards! Write a fairytale and bring it to life through programming, pollinate flowers, explore community resources, and so much more. There’s no limit to the work robots can do, and you’ll try it all.

  • Grade Level: Grades 1-4

Animal Adventures

NEW! Bring the science of living things to your classroom in this interactive ecological adventure. First, you’ll meet and touch some of COSI’s live animals to explore their adaptations, diets, and habitats. Then, you’ll touch real animal furs, piece together life cycle puzzles, and build a habitat around a living reptile. With a dichotomous key and video microscope, you’ll inspect real arthropods to decide “Is it a bug?” and explore the science of animal tracking by getting up close and personal with animal tracks… and the scat they leave behind!

  • Grade Level: Grades 3-8

Astronomy Academy

NEW! Discover the foundations of astronomy in this out-of-this-world outreach workshop. First, we’ll explore our stellar neighborhood – our solar system – and construct a classroom-sized model of the relative size and distance of the planets. Then, we’ll examine air pressure and explore how your weight and even your age might be different on another planet! Finally, you’ll put teamwork to the test with engineering challenges by building a free-standing moon base from simple materials and designing, building, testing, and redesigning air-powered rockets.

  • Grade Level: Grades 5-8

Gadgets-To-Go

NEW! The excitement of engineering, force and motion, and mechanics hits the road in this energizing hands-on workshop. We’ll explore energy – at work in the world around us – and how it flows through conductors. You’ll dream it and build it with awe-inspiring Blue Blocks and construct magnetic marble-run roller coasters; program real robots, construct circuits to make music, and even design, build, test, and redesign to create a recycled floating contraption in our five-foot-tall wind tube!

  • Grade Level: Grades 1-6

Gross Science: Bodyworks

NEW! In this brand new, totally engrossing workshop, you’ll get hands-on with the surprising science of the human body. We’ll start small – really small – by examining the mighty power of microorganisms and building a bloodstream right in your classroom. Then, you’ll sort organ sizes, compare and contrast healthy and broken bones with real human X-rays, measure yourself against record-holding humans, and make your own sticky, slimy snot to see how this gross product has a very important job to do!

  • Grade Level: Grades 1-4

Coaster Creators

Hold on tight! This open inquiry, engineering design workshop is filled with ups and downs as you explore the engineering process, communication, and collaboration. First, put the force of gravity (and teamwork) to the test in a wild marble challenge. Then, scream ahead as you build your own roller coaster around chairs, through desks, and across chalkboards. With limitless flexible track, supports, and marbles, if you can dream it, you can design it, build it, test it, and redesign it until your coaster is ready to thrill.
  • Grade Level: Grades 3-12

Robotics I: Intermediate Programming

Become a part of an engineering team using a LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 robot – a sophisticated and state-of-the-art handheld robot waiting for your input. In this intermediate level programming design workshop, you’ll put your robot to the test as you assemble a program to complete a dizzying challenge. Practice programming, sequencing, measurement, teamwork and more as you test and adjust your plan one step at a time. After you’ve mastered Intermediate, you can graduate on to COSI’s Robotics II: Advanced Programming workshop to put your skills to the ultimate test.

  • Grade Level: Grades 5-12

CSI: Criminal Science Investigation

NEW! Transform your classroom into a forensics laboratory and bring the science behind a crime scene to life. In this surprising hands-on program, you’ll dig into real, true crime case files and explore the scientific technologies, processes, and procedures that propel investigators forward: use graphology to analyze handwriting on real ransom notes, explore chromatography to trace ink compounds, test pH using universal indicator and phenolphthalein, and, of course, explore fingerprinting as you collect hard evidence from a crime scene!
  • Grade Level: Grades 5-12

Catapults and Trebuchets

Bring force and motion into your classroom in this surprising physics lab modeled around these medieval siege contraptions. Using the engineering process, you’ll design, build, test, and redesign your own catapults and trebuchets from recycled materials. Test for distance or accuracy as your class’s creativity comes to life in a totally open engineering exploration! Can you construct functioning battle weaponry? Discover how physics is at play even in the most unlikely of circumstances.
  • Grade Level: Grades 9-12

Robotics II: Advanced Programming

Ready for the ultimate programming test? Once you’ve graduated from COSI’s Robotics I: Intermediate Programming, the real challenges begin. Using LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 robots, you’ll engage with programming software and engineer complex programs step-by-step using environmental sensors, precise measurement, and technical know-how to complete advanced mazes and mind-boggling challenges before time runs out. Best of all, Advanced Robotics grows as you do – try it again and again as you fine-tune your programming skills and test new sensors to complete new challenges.

In Depth Dissection: Cow Eye

Diagrams can only take you so far. To really understand what’s going on inside of the eye, you’ve got to see it for yourself. In this engaging and eye-opening classroom program, you’ll explore the complex structure and function of a cow’s eye to examine how it relates to our own. Surprising, scientific, and sometimes slimy, this gripping view of the inner eye may leave you seeing things differently.
  • Grade Level: Grades 9-12

In Depth Dissection: Sheep Brain

Your thoughts, memories, skills, personality, senses… Your brain is you. In this hands-on program, you’ll explore the function of the brain by testing your brain’s processing power and its division of labor – your lobes and hemispheres – in unforgettable exercises and illusions. Then, your team will dissect a real sheep brain to examine how structure and function unite to create you – everything about who you are – in three pounds of flesh.
