The Universe in a Glass of Ice Water

Ah, summertime! Warm weather, sunny days, and glasses of ice water on the table – er, I mean, the coaster, Mom. Really! Those crystalline cubes clinking against the glass, cooling all they touch and slowly, slowly disappearing into the background.

Incredibly, the science of ice water has a lot in common with the science of stars, including our own warmth-providing star the Sun. Let's look a little more deeply....

Update: A Bang for the Flash!

They did it. A large collaboration of scientists, watching the spot in the constellation Leo where a humongous gamma ray burst occurred in late April, have seen the giant supernova explosion they were expecting after such a monumental event. Not only that, but the explosion was so large and powerful that it created the universe's oddest inhabitant – a black hole!

Museum Geeks Unite - at least for a weekend!

There's just one statewide gathering in Ohio each year that welcomes professionals from every kind of museum in the Buckeye State: it's the annual conference of the Ohio Museums Association (OMA). Last month, 100 representatives from Ohio museums gathered in Sandusky, Ohio for OMA's annual get-together, to exchange ideas, to network, and to be inspired by our friends' successes. OMA's membership includes professional staffers and dedicated volunteers from art, history, and science museums, nature centers, historic homes, arboretums, aquariums, zoos, and other cultural institutions.
Some of the 100 OMA conference attendees about to embark a chilly pre-conference ferry ride to historic South Bass Island & Gibraltar Islands in Lake Erie, including a trip to Ohio State's famous Stone Laboratory.
