Thinking about Climate Change: Global Warming versus Climate Change

My last blog post was inspired by social media comments, such as “So much for global warming”, made after a few particularly cold days in Ohio. As I mentioned previously, some of the confusion about the topic of global warming may come from the terminology we use to describe it. In my last post I explored the difference between weather and climate. Other terms that can be confusing are global warming and global climate change.

Exploring the Science of Cold

Recently at COSI, toddlers were busy engaging scientific inquiry through explorations of all things COLD!  In our Friday morning and Saturday morning Cold Science workshops, toddlers and their caregivers investigated really cool, wet, and dry experiments and connected with literacy through Keith Baker’s story, No Two Alike.

Thinking about Climate Change: Climate versus Weather

After days of extreme cold, like the ones we experienced early last week, I often notice comments on social media sites such as “So much for global warming”.  These comments seem to confuse long-term, global phenomena with short-term, regional weather events. I think some of the confusion people have about this topic comes from our understanding of the different terminology used to describe specific events and phenomena. One set of terminology that can be confusing is the difference between weather and climate.

Building a City in BigKidLab

In COSI’s Big KidLab, children have been working hard to design and build a city. Using recyclable materials such as milk jugs, egg cartons, cardboard, yogurt containers, and much more, children have become inspired to create a meaningful addition for the city.

COSI team members and adults have encouraged children to think about what is in a city. What structures are in a city? What does a city need? What did you see outside on your way to COSI? What do you wish a city could have?
