little kidspace® Health Clinic Redesign

Designed and staffed by early education experts for children from birth through first grade, little kidspace® is a signature COSI exhibition area that promotes learning in a colorful and engaging atmosphere for little hands and growing minds. With nearly 260,000 visitors each year, little kidspace offers BIG-sized fun for pint-sized scientists.

Play is essential to a child’s development, helping foster foundational skills necessary for school readiness and success. Through climbing, building, splashing, and other hands-on activities, COSI’s youngest visitors are immersed in a playful learning environment that nurtures natural curiosities and launches a lifelong love of learning.

The clinic is one of the most popular exhibits within little kidspace…
The clinic features a medical helicopter, an ambulance, an eye doctor’s office, and a clinic room complete with doctor/patient props and equipment. Here, children become doctors, consult X-rays, administer shots, and rush patients to the hospital. Such experiences allow children to engage in pretend play, bringing the world to themselves on their own terms and “trying on” the lives of others.

But the clinic is outdated and in need of its own surgery!...
COSI is committed to keeping pace with evolving best practices in the field of early childhood education. Our current clinic has a whimsical look and feel, but our renovated clinic will feature an updated, more realistic design that will be more appealing and engaging for the children who use it.

Many of the “toys” available in the space will be replaced by real, safe-to-handle medical equipment including video microscopes. A more realistic environment for role play ensures parents and their children become familiar with medical tools and environments in a fun way, encouraging them to overcome any fears of doctors or hospitals and see the importance of medicine and medical technology in leading healthy, happy lives.
